A breakfast conversation between
Ronnie Lane and Robin Henkel.

In a cynical and slightly dark
humor, this cartoon depicts how
musicians and other artists put
their best work forward and it is
often not appreciated by the
"buying" public.

The insinuation here is a whiney
yet understandable negative attitude
that many of us have engaged at one
time or another. That is: if we
really try to do our best, it won't
be appreciated.

If you don't play music for a
living you may not get the drift
of this sick wit. So I 'll try to
explain. If you are looking for
a gig at a club, don't ever tell the
club-owner/manager that you play
jazz. To them, jazz is that kind of
music that is a bunch of garbled
up notes they can't understand.
Even some musicians don't dig it.
In the exact words of one of them
"I can't hear the four chord."

To many musicians, jazz is one of
highest states of musical art and
yet it is probably the least appreciated.
Some of the finest musicians in the
world take a back seat to others
that have a better public appeal.
I shouldn't complain.

The cartoon merely voices
a sentiment we often hear.
